My Period Experience

Hey Y´all!

When I was little I remember my mom having her period. I was fascinated at the tampons that disappeared into her body. What did it mean? When would it happen to me?

Naturally as I got older, my friends began to bleed around me. From the little my mother told me and the information I could gather from my friends these were my beliefs around my period

  • everybody experiences PMS

  • if you have sex you will become pregnant

  • your period is limiting and kinda gross

  • get on birth control asap to control acne and prevent having kids

  • don’t tell anybody you are bleeding, its shameful and dirty

One vivid memory I have is freshman year of high school. I was in the locker room, I had just started my period. A girl who was changing near me suddenly spoke out(very loudly) ¨ugh it smells like period blood, gross¨. I was mortified. There was no way she could have known it was me emitting a smell but after that I started fearing my periods even more. I associated period=smelly and gross.

I remember, as I started having sexual relations, all the SHAME I felt whenever I told a boy I couldn’t have sex because I was bleeding. It felt dirty and taboo and I hated my period.

It took me years and years to be comfortable with my nature. My cycle. My bleeding.

I just want you to know, your (average) 28 day cycle is a beautiful thing. Instead of fighting the flow, we can embrace the different stages and utilize the gifts they bring. Here is a lil sampling into what your Infradian Rhythm(menstrual cycle) has to offer

Menstruation: (day 1-5)The bleed. A time for introspection and ease. Hormones are low. Take time off, have a bath, do some yin yoga, put your feet up

Follicular Phase: (day 6-14)New Beginnings. A time for planning your month, starting projects, gaining momentum. Eat light to support your lower metabolism. Hormones and energy is rising. Get your sweat on.

Ovulatory Phase: (day 15-17)Go Big. Get social and try new things. Energy is highest. Libido is highest. Play hard and work hard. Get pregnant now if it is in your plan.

Luteal Phase: (day 18-28)First few days are similar to Ovulatory, then hormones drop. Time to finish projects, wrap things up, slow down. Metabolism speeds up, not a time for fasting. Strength training works well.

and then we start over again with menstruation

****every woman´s cycle is different, days may be longer or shorter

If you really want to dive in to syncing with your cycle, I recommend reading In the Flow by Alisa Vitti. She teaches you that PMS is NOT natural. There are ways to support your body throughout the month so you can THRIVE.

The bottom line is this- We are cyclical beings. Our hormones are always in flow. Our lives are always in flow.

I want to empower you to own your cycle. Own the fluctuations in your moods. Your are entitled to every single mood swing. Own your inner workings and know that your body is a powerful machine.
